About
Siegmund Lubin was a Polish-Jewish immigrant who initially worked grinding spectacle lenses in Philadelphia when Edison's motion picture camera inspired him. A tinkerer and natural salesman, he began constructing his own cameras and projectors and producing his own films. By 1902, he had established the Lubin Manufacturing Company. Known affectionately as "Pop," Lubin became one of the most prolific early film producers, creating comedies, melodramas, and popular reenactments of prizefights from his glass-roofed studio, Lubinville, and later from a larger facility at Betzwood.
As a founding member of the Motion Picture Patents Company, the Edison-led trust that sought to monopolize the film industry, Lubin experienced years of protected success. His trademark bell and Liberty Bell logo appeared on thousands of one- and two-reel films, and at its peak, the company employed hundreds and distributed prints globally.
However, the foundation soon crumbled. In 1914, an explosion and fire in the company's film vault destroyed a vast collection of negatives, an irrecoverable loss. The same year, the outbreak of war in Europe disrupted the profitable export market Lubin relied on. Additionally, the business model of short films that had brought him success was being replaced by the emerging trend of feature-length pictures, a shift the aging Lubin was slow to adopt. Meanwhile, federal courts were dismantling the trust that had once protected him. Overwhelmed by these challenges, the company fell into insolvency, and on September 1, 1916, the Lubin Manufacturing Company permanently closed its doors, its founder left ruined and largely forgotten by the industry he had helped shape.
