Nestor Film Company

The Nestor Film Company originated as a brand under David Horsley's Centaur enterprise in Bayonne, New Jersey. The British-born Horsley and his collaborators produced small-scale comedies and dramas as independent filmmakers outside the Edison Trust. Limited by the harsh winters in the East that disrupted filming for extended periods, Horsley sent a production team west in search of consistent sunlight. In the autumn of 1911, his brother-in-law Al Christie located a suitable site on the outskirts of a quiet Los Angeles suburb.

On October 27, 1911, Nestor established the first permanent motion picture studio in Hollywood by converting the abandoned Blondeau Tavern at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Gower Street into soundstages, offices, and dressing rooms. From that location, later known as "Gower Gulch," the company produced a consistent output of Westerns, comedies, and dramas, often three per week, setting a precedent for year-round film production in California that would soon attract the broader industry to the West Coast.

Nestor's pioneering status is well established, but its independence was short-lived. Like many anti-Edison Trust producers, Horsley aligned with Carl Laemmle's consolidation efforts, and in May 1912 the Nestor Film Company merged into the newly created Universal Film Manufacturing Company. The Nestor name continued as a comedy imprint, and Al Christie would later enjoy a lengthy career in screen comedy, but the original company was absorbed within months of its historic achievements. Its lasting legacy is geographic rather than corporate: the global movie capital developed around the site where Nestor first set up its camera.
