A former teen-idol actor reinvented himself as the maestro of the foreign pre-sale, financing a decade of ambitious pictures on the strength of contracts signed before a frame was shot — until the model, and the company, ran out of road (1977-1986).

About

Mark Damon began his career as a leading man in Poe-inspired films and Italian genre pictures before discovering a talent that would prove more significant: his ability to finance films from the outside. In 1977, he founded Producers Sales Organization (PSO) and helped pioneer the international pre-sale model, in which a film's rights were sold in individual territories before production, with the contracts themselves serving as collateral to raise the budget.

This cash-flow-driven approach allowed for the production of ambitious films without studio backing and initially proved highly successful. PSO played a key role in financing several notable films of the era, including the German submarine epic *Das Boot*, the fantasy classic *The NeverEnding Story*, the erotic drama *9½ Weeks*, the robot comedy *Short Circuit*, the adventure film *Flight of the Navigator*, and the prehistoric saga *The Clan of the Cave Bear*. For a company built on financial strategy and sales, PSO demonstrated an unusually bold cinematic sensibility.

However, the pre-sale model was inherently risky. It required foreign markets to perform as expected, films to deliver on time and within budget, and each new round of sales to cover previous financial commitments. As production costs increased and some key titles failed to meet projections, the financial model began to falter. The company extended itself beyond what its revenue could sustain.

In 1986, PSO was forced into bankruptcy, its complex financing structure collapsing. Damon, however, remained active in the industry, later founding Vision International and other sales companies to continue promoting the pre-sale model. PSO's downfall remains a cautionary example of the independent film era—demonstrating how a groundbreaking financing strategy can support a decade of memorable films, yet ultimately fall victim to its own financial leverage.
