About

Spelling-Goldberg Productions was a production company founded in 1972 by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg. Known for its focus on popular entertainment, the company became synonymous with glossy, star-driven television that emphasized pleasure over prestige. Spelling, a prolific writer-producer with a strong sense of audience taste, and Goldberg, an experienced executive, combined their talents to create a slate of shows that embraced escapism and high-concept storytelling.

The company's early success included *The Rookies* and *S.W.A.T.*, which brought action to the police drama genre. However, it was *Starsky and Hutch* and especially *Charlie's Angels* that propelled the company to national prominence. The latter, featuring a trio of glamorous female detectives, became a cultural phenomenon and a defining example of what critics referred to as "jiggle television." The Spelling-Goldberg model—combining attractive stars, sunny settings, and high-concept plots—was highly repeatable and led to other successful series such as *Fantasy Island*, *Hart to Hart*, and *Family*.

The partnership was built on a shared understanding of audience comfort, emphasizing familiar faces, exotic locations, and predictable, satisfying resolutions. For much of the 1970s, Spelling-Goldberg shows were regular fixtures on network schedules, and the company became emblematic of the era's sun-drenched, entertaining, and often lighthearted television.

By 1982, both Spelling and Goldberg decided to part ways. The partnership was dissolved, and Spelling continued his career independently, later achieving further success with *Dynasty*, *Beverly Hills, 90210*, and *Melrose Place*. Goldberg also went on to have a distinguished career in production and executive roles. Though the joint company lasted only a decade, its influence—centered on beautiful people solving tidy problems in beautiful places—would continue to shape popular television for years to come.
