Synopsis
July of 1916 was marked by record heat, a polio epidemic, and an ongoing World War in Europe. At the same time, beachgoers in New Jersey faced a more immediate and terrifying threat: a shark that had developed a taste for human flesh. Over a period of 12 days, beginning on July 1st, an unidentified shark killed four people and seriously injured a fifth before the attacks ceased, causing alarm and threatening New Jersey's thriving tourist industry. The events are based on true incidents and are considered one of the inspirations behind Peter Benchley's novel *Jaws*.
