A Child Went Forth
Synopsis
The film opens with a line from Whitman, "There was a child went forth every day," introducing a visit to a farm that functions as a summer camp and progressive school for exploration and discovery. The children, some as young as two or three, are given space and time to question, wonder, and learn. Activities include building a wading pool, using tools, climbing and swinging, and bathing a dog, all while learning to live together. There are occasional conflicts, but minimal adult intervention. A tree house inspires the children's imagination. They visit a neighboring farm, interact with the animals, and ride on a tractor that is plowing. The day includes meals, naps, story time, art at easels, and a lollipop. According to the narrator, it is the perfect place for city children to be safe from constant stimulation.
