A Soldier's Love Story

Jared Marshall, a ten-year-old boy, experienced a significant upheaval in his life following his parents' divorce a year earlier. His father became increasingly focused on work, while his mother moved him from Iowa to California to live with her mother in order to take a new job. When Jared's class at school wrote letters to U.S. troops stationed in Bosnia, kind-hearted Sergeant First Class Vince Carerra, who had grown up without a father and later divorced due to his wife's infidelity during his deployment, took an interest in the boy and began a correspondence with him, offering fatherly advice. After Vince's unit returned to Fort Sebastian, he visited Jared at his home and was warmly welcomed. Vince became Jared's personal baseball coach and, with some encouragement, developed a relationship with Jared's mother, though they understood that any commitment would be limited due to Vince's potential redeployment.
