A Thousand Clowns

Synopsis
Twelve-year-old Nick lives with his Uncle Murray, a Mr. Micawber-like Dickensian character who constantly hopes something will eventually turn up. What does turn up is a social worker, who develops feelings for Murray and a slight attraction to Nick. As child welfare officials pressure Murray to conform to conventional behavior as a condition for allowing him to remain Nick's guardian, the boy—previously proud of his uncle's unconventional lifestyle—tries to act as a mediator. However, Nick becomes unsettled when Murray proves willing to compromise his principles in order to preserve their relationship.
