Afonya
Synopsis
The 1975 film *Afonya* by Georgi Daneliya was an unexpected commercial success in the USSR. The main character, Afonya Borshev, is a plumber who spends his life partying with his "buddies," many of whom he forgets after nights of heavy drinking. His wife leaves him, his boss puts him on probation, and his life begins to fall apart, though he remains unaware of it. Afonya meets Katya at a dance club but pays her little attention. However, she is the one who may be able to save him. In this film, Daneliya achieves a perfect balance of satire and drama. Quotes from the movie became cult favorites in the USSR.
