Synopsis
In the 19th century, song pluggers in vaudeville theaters and on the streets encouraged audiences to join in the chorus, a tradition of participation that made its way into movie theaters by the mid-1910s. When synchronized sound arrived in film, Fleischer Studios’ “Screen Songs” added animated prologues and featured celebrity singers to introduce the animated ball that illustrated the lyrics.
