Synopsis

The film opens with a shot of a cassette recorder, which includes a jukebox, and music is a constant presence throughout. At a festival press conference, when asked by some critics what the film was about, Wim Wenders responded that it was about the song "All Along the Watchtower," and how the story and its changes depend on whether the song is performed by Bob Dylan or Jimi Hendrix. Both versions of the song appear in the film, and many found Wenders' explanation of the story to be somewhat presumptuous. Nevertheless, the film is indeed centered on the contrast between the Dylan and Jimi Hendrix versions of "All Along the Watchtower," with one appearing at the beginning and the other at the end.
