Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within
Synopsis
The case of Robert Philip Hanssen, a senior Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent, is widely regarded as one of the most severe espionage incidents in U.S. history. From 1979 to 2001, Hanssen is believed to have sold classified information to the Soviet Union and later Russia for approximately $1.4 million in cash and other payments. His espionage activities compromised numerous U.S. intelligence operations and led to the deaths of several American and allied intelligence officers. Hanssen was arrested in February 2001 after a long investigation by the FBI's Counterintelligence Division. In 2002, he was convicted of 15 counts of espionage and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His case remains a significant example of the risks posed by insider threats within national security agencies.
