Synopsis
In the lower‑middle‑class Adams household, the father and son are content working in a drugstore, while the mother and daughter, Alice, pursue various social‑climbing schemes despite facing snubs and embarrassment. When Alice meets her ideal partner, Arthur, the mother pressures the father into undertaking a risky business venture and arranges an “upscale” family dinner intended to impress Arthur. The outcome of this effort threatens to drive Arthur away.
