Alice Wins the Derby
Synopsis
Alice, Julius, and another character participate in a combined auto and horse race. Julius has a poor start when his car speeds off without him in the wrong direction, and it takes him some time to regain control. Alice and the antagonist compete for the lead, which Alice eventually captures. They pass a detour, which the antagonist alters by changing the sign. Julius, now on the incorrect route, drives up a cliff and, after a strenuous effort at the top, reaches the changeover point in third place. Alice and the antagonist continue on horses, while Julius rides a wind-up wooden horse. Julius's horse repeatedly malfunctions, ultimately losing its back legs, which he props up with an empty thought balloon. Alice's horse jumps a fence but refuses to proceed. It appears the antagonist will win, but Alice makes a powerful leap and knocks him off, securing her victory in the race.
