Am Abgrund
Synopsis
Gerd Meineke is a member of the Bundestag and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. His partner, Alina, has a daughter named Leyla, who was detained in Azerbaijan as an opposition figure. Leyla is a blogger advocating for democracy and environmental protection in her home country. Gerd travels to Baku as an election observer for the Council of Europe, aiming to campaign for Leyla's release and that of other political prisoners. Upon arrival, he discovers that the government and lobbyists of powerful companies are exploiting politicians like himself to legitimize the environmentally damaging extraction of critical raw materials. Leyla and her friend Valentina reveal to him the extent of the corruption, which reaches into Western European political circles. The question remains whether Gerd, with the help of Leyla and Valentina, can expose the political corruption.
