Amish: A Secret Life

Miriam and Dave Lapp are a young couple with several children. Dave works in and part-owns a construction company. They are members of the "Old Order" Amish community in Pennsylvania, whose church prohibits all technology—although Dave uses a car for commuting to work, and the couple risks disapproval from church elders by allowing themselves to be filmed. After introducing their traditional lifestyle to the camera, Miriam persuades several friends to be filmed as well. It becomes clear that the Lapps and other younger Amish, who have been rebaptized to adopt a more open evangelical approach—thereby risking excommunication—see a need for change within the community. The film concludes with the family working toward the goal of owning their own farm.
