Synopsis

In May 1974, shortly after Willy Brandt's resignation and during the World Cup, 19-year-old NVA soldier Alex Karow is stationed at the West German-East German border. The army is marked by brutal rituals that are either tolerated or actively used by the officers. Alex begins to realize that the ideals of balance, democracy, and human dignity promoted by the regime are mere propaganda. The soldiers are constantly preoccupied with the question of what to do when someone appears in the sights of the Kalashnikov, a dilemma that dominates their thoughts day and night, only briefly interrupted by the World Cup matches, including the historic game between the GDR and the FRG. Alex finds emotional support in his love for Christine, a confident tractor driver from the neighboring village, who encourages him to pursue his dream of becoming a photographer rather than follow in his father's footsteps. However, when Christine's brother sends one of Alex's photos from the border fortifications to the West, the situation spirals out of control.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 17

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
