Synopsis

Stage star Anna Held (1872–1918) reenacts a once-famous scene from her stage comedy *Papa's Wife* (1899–1901), in which a naive character becomes tipsy on her first champagne, in this "photographic interview" filmed in 68mm by Frederick S. Armitage. According to the AM&B Picture Catalogue of 1902, the piece was described as "A stunning picture of the well-known actress in the drinking scene which made such a hit in *Papa's Wife*. The figure is shown in bust view, making the head very large and giving a clear view of the facial expressions of the beautiful artiste." The company noted that the footage could serve as "make hits either in the Biograph [35mm projection service] or Mutoscope" [hand-cranked peep-show viewer].

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 2

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
