Artemis' Knee
Synopsis
After the death of his partner and collaborator Danièle Huillet, Straub turns to music and nature for comfort. From the depths of grief, Kathleen Ferrier's rendition of “The Farewell” from Gustav Mahler’s *The Song of the Earth*—a piece the composer wrote in 1909 following the death of his daughter—and Heinrich Schütz’s *Lament on the Death of His Wife* offer emotional resonance. The natural landscape also serves as a source of solace: a mountain grove where Endymion longs for his beloved Artemis, described as “a wild thing, untouchable, mortal,” seems to reflect the Japanese concept of *mono no aware*—a poignant awareness of the transient beauty of life.
