Att vara zigenare
Synopsis
The film features Roma and Sinti people sharing their experiences under the Third Reich and in the Federal Republic of Germany. Inspired by Otto Pankok’s 1930s paintings of Romani themes, which were declared degenerate art by the Nazis, the film presents personal narratives of persecution, discrimination, and marginalization. These stories reveal how the Roma and Sinti have often been treated as second-class citizens, a situation that continues into the film’s present day, as they live in inhumane conditions in barracks on the outskirts of cities and remain unrecognized as Nazi victims. The film uses long, nearly uncut sequences to allow space for the people and their stories. It is considered one of the most important works by Peter and Zsóka Nestler.
