Synopsis

In *Au bord du lac*, Bokanowski revisits the intricate and complex optical system of pinholes, mirrors, prisms, and refractive substrates featured in his earlier work *La Plage*. The film presents ordinary scenes of leisure and recreation on a pleasant, sunny day at a park overlooking a lake—such as rowing a boat, playing volleyball, rollerskating, bicycling, reading a newspaper, sunbathing, horseback riding, and strolling along the promenade—captured through optical distortions that produce fractured and twisted images. These images resemble ornate, gothic fairytale illustrations or evolve into morphing geometric patterns of fluid motion. Drawing on the vivid colors and sunlit palette reminiscent of a revitalized Vincent van Gogh in Arles, Bokanowski transforms everyday moments into a mesmerizing, dynamic kaleidoscope of shape-shifting textures and self-reconstituting objects, blending organic and abstract visual elements.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 5

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
