Synopsis

In a near-future Europe, the continent is in turmoil as right-wing extremists have seized power in numerous countries. The former democratic state of Germany has transformed into a totalitarian regime that systematically persecutes dissenters, Muslims, and homosexuals. Jan Schneider, a lawyer who has consistently defended marginalized victims, faces renewed persecution from the regime and decides to flee with his family. Their destination is the politically and economically stable South African Union, which has experienced a period of economic growth. A freighter is arranged to transport him, his wife Sarah, and their children, Nora and Nick, along with other refugees, to Cape Town. However, upon arrival in Namibia, the tugboats abandon the passengers in small, inadequate boats. A storm at sea leads to disaster, and the youngest child, Nick, is lost; it remains uncertain whether he reached the shore.
