Bald: The Making of 'THX 1138'

Runtime
8 min
Documentary

Synopsis

The film includes a conversation between George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, the producer of *THX 1138*. They discuss Lucas's vision for the film, covering his general ideas about science fiction and his specific concept of the "used future," which would later appear in his film *Star Wars*. This dialogue is intercut with footage shot before the production of *THX 1138* began, showing several of the film's actors having their heads shaved, a requirement for their roles. In some instances, the actors are shaved in public locations. For example, Maggie McOmie is shaved outside the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, while Robert Duvall watches a sporting event as his hair is cut. Another actor, Marshall Efron, who later portrayed an insane man in the film, cut off his own hair, and the scene was filmed in a bathtub.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 10

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
