The "Video Nasty" scandal of the early 1980s in Britain centered on a wave of horror and exploitation films released on home video, which were accused of containing extreme violence, gore, and sexual content. The term "Video Nasty" was coined by the media and government officials to describe these films, many of which had not been previously released in the UK or had only been shown in adult cinemas. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had not formally rated many of these titles, leading to concerns about their accessibility to young viewers. In response, the government, under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, launched a campaign to ban or restrict the distribution of these films. Over 70 titles were specifically targeted, and the British government passed the Video Recordings Act in 1984, requiring all video content to be classified by the BBFC before being sold or rented. The controversy reflected broader societal anxieties about media violence, youth culture, and the rapid expansion of the home video market.
