Betrayed by a Handprint
Synopsis
Mrs. Wharton, a stylish and recently widowed woman, hosts a party at her elegant villa to celebrate the gift of a striking diamond necklace from her fiancé. During the evening, guests participate in a bridge game, including Myrtle Vane. Miss Vane experiences terrible luck at the table and is repeatedly urged by Mrs. Wharton to stop playing. Despite this, she continues, hoping to reverse her fortune, until she eventually risks everything and loses. Facing embarrassment and financial ruin, she must find a way to recover her lost funds. Among the attendees is Professor Francois Paracelsus, a renowned palmist, who is invited to read the palms of the guests. Sheets of paper are prepared for this purpose, and each guest imprints their hand on a sheet for the professor to examine at his convenience. The sheets are left on the drawing room table.
