Clara, a widow, and Ulf, a widower, share an unusual situation: both are mourning their spouses, but neither can have them officially declared dead. While there are no official doubts regarding the suicide of Ulf's wife, Anke, or the fatal glacier crash that claimed Clara's husband, Enno, the officer responsible for notarizing the deaths insists on a corpse—something that does not exist in either case. To help each other emotionally process their grief, Clara and Ulf form an informal two-person support group after meeting by chance. The self-assured perfumer and successful novelist soon find themselves experiencing feelings that extend beyond typical grief. Their emotions are further complicated when they discover that their spouses appear to have several surprising similarities. A compromising photo of Anke with Enno, their near-simultaneous disappearances, and their involvement in a multi-million-dollar fraud raise the possibility that the two may have run off together.
