Born in New York City on May 25, 1899, Humphrey Bogart was the son of Belmont Bogart, a successful businessman, and Belle Bogart, a former actress. He was raised in a middle-class household and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York after graduating from high school. His early interest in acting led him to stage work in the 1910s and 1920s, including a brief stint in Europe. Upon returning to the United States, he began appearing in Broadway productions, which brought him to the attention of Hollywood casting directors. His first film role was in *The Dancing Town* (1925), and he continued to appear in a number of silent and early talkies, often in supporting roles. It was not until the late 1930s that Bogart began to achieve significant recognition in film, with roles in *The Petrified Forest* (1936) and *The Maltese Falcon* (1941), the latter of which established him as a leading man in the film noir genre.
