Synopsis
Bop Scotch, an early film by Jordan Belson from 1952, features animated real objects, such as pavements. Belson also used scroll paintings prepared like film strips with successive images, as seen in Mandala from 1953. Although Belson later withdrew these films from circulation, considering them imperfect and primitive, they already demonstrate his refined plastic sensibility, fine color sense, and superb sense of dynamic structure. These works also foreshadow his more accomplished expressions of mystical concepts, with Bop Scotch appearing to reveal a hidden soul and life-force in "inanimate" objects.
