Brides
Synopsis
Nikki Douka, a young woman from Samothraki, sails to the United States to fulfill a marriage contract and restore her family’s honor. During the voyage she works as a seamstress, sewing and altering wedding dresses for third‑class passengers. While aboard she encounters an American photographer returning from the Middle East after documenting the 1922 war in Smyrna; his attraction to her honesty, pride and beauty leads him to fall in love with her. The journey is marked by various tribulations, including the dramas of several other young women who become victims of predatory characters, as Nikki contends with her feelings for the photographer.
