Synopsis

In 1995, ABC aired a telemovie adaptation of the Broadway musical *Bye Bye Birdie*, produced by RHI Entertainment. The film featured Jason Alexander, known for *Seinfeld*, and Vanessa Williams, later of *Desperate Housewives*. The version largely adhered to the original musical, with Michael Stewart as the sole credited author, though several songs were added and rearranged, and some dialogue was revised to accommodate these musical changes. The story centers on an Elvis Presley-like rock star preparing to join the Army, with his manager's secretary arranging for him to kiss a random fan goodbye on a show similar to *The Ed Sullivan Show*. The original 1961 Broadway production won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for Dick Van Dyke. ABC's version also included Tyne Daly, George Wendt, Chynna Phillips, and Mark Kudisch in supporting roles.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 19

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
