Synopsis
What is true and what is false in the disturbing stories circulated about the controversial Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (12–41), known as Caligula? Professor Mary Beard examines which details in the historical accounts portraying him as an unstable ruler are accurate and which are mythical. Was he truly a cruel tyrant, as described by Roman historians, or was the truth about him altered for political reasons?
