Synopsis

Perhaps the only film whose content is entirely based on the musical form known as canon. The first sequence is a simple demonstration of the canon "Frère Jacques," in which four cubes dance and combine with one another on a checkerboard. The second sequence shows four little human-like figures dancing in space. The third and most elaborate sequence shows a human going through several strange gestures. Through multiple printing, we realize that the man, as in the previous sequences, is part of a visual canon and is making the gestures to himself. As we hear variations on the canonic theme, so too do we witness visual variations: a woman and a cat enter the canon. To illustrate the musical technique of inversion, the image of the man is printed upside down.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 4

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
