Synopsis
Two unforeseen problems led many fans to regard this as the weakest Christmas special. Firstly, Talbot Rothwell fell ill while writing the script and was unable to complete it. Dave Freeman was brought in to finish the script, but the two did not collaborate, resulting in a script that did not flow as smoothly as earlier episodes. Secondly, Charles Hawtrey withdrew from the special at short notice. Having been third-billed to Sid James and Terry Scott in the previous two shows, and aware that both would be absent, Hawtrey demanded top billing. Carry On producer Peter Rogers refused, instead giving top billing to Hattie Jacques. Hawtrey's role was hastily recast and divided between Norman Rossington and Brian Oulton, both of whom had appeared in cameo roles in several Carry On films. The special featured a collection of historical sketches, loosely connected by the setting of an 18th-century banquet.
