Synopsis

Hundreds of years ago in Lapland, a boy named Nikolas lost his family in an accident. The villagers collectively cared for the orphaned child, and each year at Christmas Nikolas moved to a new home. To express gratitude, he began making toys as farewell presents for the children of the families that had taken him in. Over time his former adoptive families multiplied, and almost every house received presents on its doorstep on Christmas morning. At age thirteen, Nikolas was sent to live and work with Iisakki, a grumpy old carpenter who initially forbade him from continuing the Christmas presents. Gradually, Nikolas earned Iisakki’s trust, and together they maintained the tradition that Nikolas had started. When the aging Iisakki later left and moved away, the practice of giving Christmas presents was again threatened, but Nikolas devised a solution that continued to bring children joy each Christmas and persists to the present day.
