Synopsis
Alan Turing was a British mathematician who played a key role in breaking the German naval Enigma code during World War II, an effort that is widely regarded as having saved millions of lives. His contributions were not fully recognized during his lifetime. In 1952, he was convicted of "gross indecency" for having a relationship with another man, a criminal offense at the time. As part of his sentence, Turing underwent chemical castration. He died by cyanide poisoning in 1954 at the age of 41. His death was attributed to despair, brought on by the persecution he faced from the country he had helped to save.
