Synopsis
Columbus' fourth voyage proved unsuccessful: he failed to find a westward passage, returned without gold, suffered losses in both men and ships, and his attempts to establish a colony were unsuccessful. The Spanish monarchs had no intention of restoring the rights and privileges that had been revoked from Columbus following his first voyage. As a result, Columbus faced public disgrace. Many of the surviving sailors were unwilling to return home and instead chose to remain on Hispaniola or the nearby island of Puerto Rico.
