Lieutenant Valentine Ventura is newly promoted and assigned to work with the renowned Captain Antoine Thomas, who has recently returned from a medical leave following a personal tragedy. Thomas was involved in a car crash several months earlier that resulted in the deaths of his wife and the child she was carrying. He spent several months in the hospital and now uses a wheelchair due to the loss of function in his legs. Investigating the murder of a young journalist, the two detectives manage to arrest the journalist's colleague, whose guilt appears clear. However, further evidence suggests they may have apprehended a serial killer, though the suspect only admits to the journalist's murder and denies the other killings. It becomes apparent that the suspect may be a victim of manipulation.
