Synopsis
When Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon in 1969, America was celebrated in popular history as the winner of the space race. However, this narrative is misleading. The true pioneers of space exploration were the Soviet cosmonauts. This feature-length documentary uses rare and unseen archival footage along with interviews with surviving cosmonauts to recount the compelling and often harrowing story of how the Russians led the way into the space age. A notable moment features Alexei Leonov, the first person to perform a spacewalk, describing how he became trapped outside his spacecraft 500 miles above Earth.
