Synopsis

In the 1890s Father Adolf Daens travels to Aalst, a textile town marked by widespread child labor, poor pay, harsh working conditions, disenfranchised poor, and a Catholic Church that supports the petite bourgeoisie in suppressing workers. He contributes columns to a Catholic newspaper, gaining the attention of workers and provoking outrage among the powerful. After being expelled from the Catholic Party, he founds the Christian Democrats and is elected to Parliament. Following disciplinary action by Rome, he must choose between his priestly duties and his role as an advocate for laborers. Subplots include a courageous young woman who falls in love with a socialist and survives a shop foreman's rape, children dying, and prelates playing billiards.

How many hands made this film

The scale of the collaboration

Principal cast & crew: 25

These are the principals we have on file — the full crew ran to the hundreds. Every film this size was made by far more hands than any credits list ever names.

Why a floor?

This is a minimum, not a total. We only count the credits we’ve captured so far, and coverage is uneven — a blockbuster might show a few hundred names while another of the same size shows a couple dozen. The real crews all ran into the thousands. The number here only grows as full credits are enriched — so we frame it as a floor, never a headcount.
