Darrow
Synopsis
Clarence Darrow was an American lawyer and civil libertarian known for his work in high-profile legal cases. He was born on April 18, 1857, in Kinsman, Ohio, and became one of the most prominent defense attorneys of the early 20th century. Darrow was a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 1920 and served as a key figure in the organization's early years. He gained national attention for his defense of John T. Scopes in the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial," in which he challenged the teaching of evolution being banned in Tennessee schools. Darrow was also involved in labor rights cases and defended individuals accused of crimes during periods of social unrest. He died on March 13, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois.
