Mads, a 44-year-old architect from Cologne, leads a quiet and solitary life in his empty apartment, his routine significantly curtailed since the death of his wife. A chance encounter with his childhood friend René, a cheerful single woman, brings a dramatic shift. René moves in with Mads, bringing along her two children, nine-year-old Lola and six-year-old Oscar. Life begins to regain its rhythm for Mads, who gradually embraces the unexpected role of a doting stepfather. While René does not see Mads as a potential romantic partner, their arrangement proves surprisingly harmonious. Mads's interest in the equally reserved Eva introduces a new dynamic, but this is soon overshadowed when René receives a serious medical diagnosis requiring difficult decisions. Despite his own plans, Mads understands the course of action he must take.
