Die Fledermaus
Synopsis
Opera houses often mark the start of the new year with Johann Strauss Jr.'s most popular operetta, a choice well-suited to the festive occasion. On December 31, 1983, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden staged a performance featuring an outstanding cast, with Hermann Prey and Kiri Te Kanawa in the roles of the couple whose marriage endures the comedic trials of three acts. Plácido Domingo conducted the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House with flair. The Act II party hosted by Prince Orlofsky provides a traditional showcase for elaborate staging and special appearances, and this production made full use of the opportunity. French singer Charles Aznavour made a guest appearance to perform the tailor-made chanson "She," followed by a lively pas de deux from dancers Merle Park and Wayne Eagling, choreographed by Sir Frederick Ashton.
