Die Versuchung

Matthias, the son of a well-known rural Lutheran pastor, Oskar Brendel, and his wife Karin, is on the verge of graduating without honors, unlike his older brother, who has already emigrated. A rebellious teenager, Matthias is deeply in love with Maren Grothe, a local girl. After a confrontation at the village fair with Maren's flirtatious admirer, he storms off, and later Maren is found unconscious beneath the watchtower. When Matthias goes missing, he becomes the prime suspect, leading to suspicion and mistrust toward the clerical Brendel family. Karin locates her son, whom she believes to be innocent, working as an apprentice carpenter on an island where his friend is in a relationship with Volkmann, the local carpenter. Matthias explains that he ran away after witnessing his father, Oskar, refuse to end an affair with Maren, whom he believes jumped from the tower as a suicide attempt. The Brendel family grapples with the potential consequences of these events.
