Synopsis
A voice, warm and heartbreaking—Brisseau's own—winds through black and white images. The tone is established quickly: "To wake up is to be born again in the world of despair." *On Sunday Afternoon* is a film that is at once clinical and theoretical in its exploration of melancholy, in the strong sense of the ancient Greek concept of "black bile." The filmmaker appears to aim for a full transformation of the theme, moving from its tragic to its psychological dimensions, culminating in a long quotation from Freud's *Mourning and Melancholia*.
