Women migrant workers from Mexico stand by the roadside, hoping to find work, much like crowds of unemployed Americans did during the Great Depression. One of them, Fernanda, is hired by a Hasidic family. There, Nechama, a young mother, becomes suspicious that Fernanda is lazy, only to discover that a chauvinistic representative from the recruiting agency is not paying the cleaning lady. Fernanda explains in broken English, and although she and her new friend may not be able to obtain justice, they at least consider revenge. Mutual understanding proves stronger than societal class divisions. This reconciliation across genders and cultures is seen as what the United States—and subsequently the world—might hope for.
