Synopsis
In Capellani's film, based on Zola's novel, Everyman Coupeau's repeated efforts to quit drinking are consistently undermined by the cruel and vengeful Virginie. The film portrays the downward spiral of a group of working-class French individuals into degradation and tragedy, driven by carelessness, jealousy, and alcohol abuse. Upon its release, *L'Assommoir* was a major success.
