Synopsis

In June 1946, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin issues an invitation for Russian emigrants to return to the Soviet Union, a gesture that proves to be a ruse. When a group of returnees from France arrives in Odessa, nearly all are executed or imprisoned. Only a physician and his family are spared, though not without consequence. The physician and his French wife, whose passport is destroyed, are sent to Kiev. While the wife wishes to return to France immediately, the husband understands their precarious situation and the need to tread carefully.
