Eclat
Synopsis
Eclat is a documentary that explores the work through its rehearsal process with the Netherlands' Nieuw Ensemble. The film includes commentary from the composer, conductor Ed Spanjaard, and several musicians, as well as a full performance of the piece. Eclat ("To burst out") exemplifies the lyrical pointillist style that Boulez inherited from Anton von Webern. The music features aural pinwheels and shifting musical kaleidoscopes, creating a rich instrumental color that is difficult to describe without hearing it. The piece is not suited for those who dislike "modern" music. For listeners who appreciate contemporary compositions, the work is considered masterful, and the film is recommended viewing.
