Synopsis

Business executive Nick Porter begins an affair with landscape architect Holly while jogging on his way to visit his half-brother, Benjamin "Ben" Goldman, a reclusive author who inherited an estate from his late father, also a writer. At Nick's suggestion, Holly is hired to renovate the garden at Ben's property. Though Ben's distant demeanor frustrates her, Holly is actually his first love. Learning this, as well as the fact that Ben has terminal cancer and has refused treatment, believing his life to be without meaning, Nick encourages Holly to pretend to be in love with him. Ultimately, Ben discovers the truth in a painful and inappropriate manner.
