Synopsis
A recurring theme in Tscherkassky’s work involves a play with cinematic presentation and varying degrees of recognisability—focusing on the threshold between the just-about and the no-longer. An example of this is *Erotique*. The film shows swirling images, fragments of a woman’s face, red lips, and eyes in cyclical, fragmented motion. It is often difficult to determine which part of the body is being shown (those who wish may see or imagine sexual organs and sexual acts). The viewer's gaze becomes fixated on partial objects, without the presence of an integral, whole body to consider. The depiction of a complete body has long been one of cinema’s challenges.
